Wasps, Bees & flying insects

Take great care when dealing with wasps as they have a potent sting and can attack in large numbers if disturbed or threatened. Whilst DIY products are readily available to treat wasp nests, they carry a high risk of the user getting stung, and wasps frequently attack in large numbers when 'under threat' in this way. A lone insect trapped indoors can be dealt with using a spray. If you are experiencing high numbers of wasps in your home or garden it is likely that there is a nest nearby. When queen wasps come out of hibernation they search for sheltered places with easy access to the outdoors to build their nests, often in domestic housing, making use of attics, wall cavities, roof spaces or under the eaves of buildings. A single wasp nest may contain thousands of insects which can attack if disturbed or provoked. If the location of a wasp nest is likely to put people at risk, then it should be treated immediately.

Bees should not be killed and nests should be left undisturbed whenever possible. If a bees nest represents a very high risk (such as a nest within the home, school, hospital or near those who are allergic to Bee stings), the nest can be removed.

Flies and flying insects can be real pests around the home, particularly if in large numbers. However, some species of fly also transmit a wide range of diseases including salmonella, dysentery, tuberculosis, cholera and parasitic worms. In this country, mosquitoes are less likely to spread disease than in the tropics, but the irritation caused by the bites can still be distressing, particularly for children. A professional service will often be required to get rid of large or multiple fly problems.

Cockroaches, bedbugs and fleas

Cockroaches are very resilient and while DIY products can deal with the immediate problem, treatment by a qualified pest control technician is often necessary to deal with cockroaches over the long-term.

Bedbugs (or bed bugs) are small, crawling parasitic insects. All species feed on warm blooded animals. Cimex lectularius is the bedbug that feeds on blood from humans, which can result in itchy painful bites. Adult bedbugs are small (usually 4-5mm long) flat, oval in shape and reddish-brown in colour. They stay close to a food source, so are found in areas where people tend to rest and sleep, hence the name bed bug. Bedbugs are becoming an increasing problem around the world particularly in guest accommodation. Their resurgence may well be related to a global increase in international travel (bedbugs are known to travel in luggage or clothing), as well as a possible increase in their resistance to certain pesticides. There is also a general lack of awareness of signs that point to an infestation. They spread easily and are complicated to treat, resulting in a rapid growth in the number of outbreaks around the world. A bedbug monitoring service is cost effective option to ensure early detection. The key to beating the problem is to raise awareness of the signs to look for and to ensure bedbugs are dealt with quickly and effectively by a professional pest controller once discovered.

Mice, Rats & Rodents

If left untreated, an infestation of mice can quickly spread. While amateur DIY products are a cost effective way to try to control small infestations of mice, professional treatment is required for more established mice colonies or where there is a repeated infestation. We provide highly targeted treatment to deal with any mice problems and will offer advice on how to keep your home free of mice in the future.

If not treated, a rat infestation can quickly take hold. While amateur DIY products are a cost effective way to deter rats , professional treatment is required for long term success with more established rat colonies or where there is a repeated infestation. We provide highly targeted treatment for getting rid of rats and will advise on how to keep your home free of rats in the future. We offer a call-out service to deal with rats and other pest problems in the home. Our service is fast, effective and offers the highest level of safety for your family and pets.

Wood Boring Insects, Beetles and Woodworm

Wood boring insects cover a range of beetles, weevils, borers. Most people will recognise 'woodworm' but there are many different species, each with distinctive traits. It is rarely the adult that causes any problem, rather the larvae of the beetle. Eggs are laid in or near the wood that becomes infested and the larvae hatch out, bore into the wood and are sustained until adulthood by eating it. Some species can remain in the larval stage for as long as 12 years, causing massive damage to structural timbers, valuable antiques or wooden furniture. The first sign of this pest might be holes in wood or fresh sawdust like substance falling from beams.

Occasionally you may hear the larvae 'munching' through the wood, or maybe catch sight of an adult. A qualified pest controller uses these clues to identify the insect causing the problem. Wood boring insects should never be left untreated – the problem will never go away if left alone as when the larvae mature they will in turn lay more eggs so the infestation cycle continues. Treatment must be thorough; it may be recommended that all wood in the property affected is treated and some 'common sense' guidelines followed after treatment. In cases of severe infestation you may have to move out of your home for a few days to allow all area to be treated.
